Questions About NXPowerLite
Questions about NXPowerLite, how it works and what it does to your Word, Excel and PowerPoint files:
A: NXPowerLite works by intelligently reducing the size of graphics (logos, pictures, images, clipart, etc) and, optionally, other embedded documents stored within a Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint file.
A: NXPowerLite can optimize Word, Excel or PowerPoint files created using any version of Microsoft Office from Office 97 onwards (or any other application that can save to the Word, Excel and PowerPoint file formats, such as OpenOffice, StarOffice or Google Docs). This includes files saved in the new Open XML formats (such as DOCX, XLSX or PPTX), as used by Office 2007 and Office 2008.
A: No. You do not need to have Microsoft Office installed in order to optimize your files. However, better results will be achieved with some Word documents if Microsoft Word is installed.
A: That will depend on how many graphics and embedded documents your file contains, and how large they are. Users have experienced compression rates as high as 99% with no discernible loss of quality to their files. However, if your files contain no graphics or embedded documents, you are unlikely to experience much compression.
A: No. Compression software such as WinZip works by compressing the raw data in your files, whereas NXPowerLite uses a number of different compression methods to optimize them. Therefore NXPowerLite will typically achieve a much greater compression rate with media-rich files. And with NXPowerLite there is no need to unzip your files before using them.
A: NXPowerLite will achieve significantly better results than the 'Compress Pictures' feature in Microsoft Office. This is because NXPowerLite intelligently selects the most appropriate format and compression level for each image in your document, spreadsheet or presentation, while the 'Compress Pictures' feature merely reduces the image resolution and discards any hidden information. Additionally NXPowerLite allows you to flatten any embedded documents in your file.
A: No. The optimized file remains in its original format (Word, Excel or PowerPoint).
A: The free trial version of NXPowerLite is fully functional and identical to the full version in every way. The only limitation is that it will be disabled after ten uses. A use will be counted every time NXPowerLite succeeds in reducing the size of your file by more than 10%. Once your free trial uses have expired, you can unlock NXPowerLite by purchasing a license.
A: Generally, a lot of the file bloat experienced in Word, Excel and PowerPoint files is due to a combination of:
(1) Graphics stored in uncompressed formats, such as TIFF or BMP.
(2) Large images being scaled down or cropped within Word, Excel or PowerPoint, as these applications still store the full-size image within the file.
(3) Embedded documents from other software packages, such as Photoshop images or Visio drawings.
A: Both versions of NXPowerLite contain exactly the same optimization and compression technology. The only differences between them are the ways in which this technology is accessed.
The normal version of NXPowerLite enables you to optimize a file from the menu bar in Word, Excel or PowerPoint. You can also automatically optimize a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file from within Microsoft Outlook before emailing it, or by right-clicking a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file in Windows Explorer. NXPowerLite Stand-Alone is a completely stand-alone utility that does not require installation and makes no changes your copy of Windows or Microsoft Office applications – simply drag a file onto the NXPowerLite icon to optimize it.
A: NXPowerLite File Server Edition recursively searches through a configurable set of directories, optimizing files and replacing the original files with the optimized versions.
A: NXPowerLite intelligently chooses one of three file formats, depending on the type of graphic:
(1) The JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) format is great for photographic images containing lots of colors or smooth gradients.
(2) The PNG (Portable Network Graphics) format provides an excellent replacement for the popular GIF file format, offering better compression (between 5% and 25%) and more features for us to take advantage of.
(3) The EMF (Enhanced Meta File) format enables very clear vector graphics to be stored at a tiny file size, making it perfect for flattened embedded documents such as CorelDraw or Visio drawings and Excel charts.
A: Embedded documents (such as Visio drawings or Photoshop images) tend to store far more information than Microsoft Office applications actually require in order to display them (a Photoshop image will, for example, store all of the layer information that built up during its creation). Flattening an embedded document removes this 'behind the scenes' data, leaving only the information that Word, Excel or PowerPoint needs in order to correctly display it. This drastically reduces the file size, but means that the document will no longer be editable from within Word, Excel or PowerPoint. This is why NXPowerLite always asks before flattening an embedded document.
A: Not currently. NXPowerLite only works on PCs (Microsoft Windows 2000 or later). But documents, spreadsheets and presentations that have been optimized using NXPowerLite will work fine with Mac versions of Microsoft Office.
A: Yes.
A: NXPowerLite will also optimize files created using other Office suites, such as OpenOffice, StarOffice or Google Docs, providing they are saved in the Microsoft Office file formats (such as .DOC, .XLS and .PPT or .DOCX, .XLSX and .PPTX).
Questions About Using NxpowerLite
The first place to look if you are experiencing any difficulties:
A: It's up to you. The normal version of NXPowerLite needs to be installed as it integrates with Windows and Microsoft Office. But NXPowerLite Stand-Alone is a single, stand-alone file that requires no installation. Just place it wherever you like (we find the Windows Desktop is a convenient location) and either double-click its icon, or drag a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file from an Explorer window onto the icon.
A: Yes - NXPowerLite will not affect the structure or layout of your Word, Excel or PowerPoint files.
A: You have probably already opened NXPowerLite. If NXPowerLite is already open, you should drag a presentation onto the NXPowerLite window, rather than its icon.
A: NXPowerLite works by compressing graphics and embedded documents. If a file doesn’t contain this type of content, it is unlikely that NXPowerLite will be able to reduce its size.
A: This is probably because you are using an old version of Windows. NXPowerLite no longer works with Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows ME.
Windows 95 users should use NXPowerLite 2.1 or NXPowerLite 2.1 Stand-Alone (these versions of NXPowerLite will not optimize Word or Excel files).
Windows 98 and Windows ME users should use NXPowerLite 2.5 or NXPowerLite 2.1 Stand-Alone (these versions of NXPowerLite will not optimize Word or Excel files).
A: This is probably because you have a registration code for NXPowerLite 1 or NXPowerLite 2 and have downloaded NXPowerLite 3. You can upgrade to NXPowerLite 3 for just $22.50 USD (£12.50 GBP, €17.50 EUR). Customers that have purchased Annual Maintenance can upgrade free of charge – please contact us for your new registration code.
A: Unfortunately, this is a problem with the way in which Microsoft Office applications interact with third party add-ins such as NXPowerLite. When you create a new email using this method, third party add-ins are not enabled. To get around this problem, Office 2003 users can select 'Send To Mail Recipient (for Review)' instead. Alternatively, simply open Outlook and attach the file in the usual manner.
A: There are a number of ways in which system administrators can simplify the installation and registration of NXPowerLite for multiple users. Please contact us for more information.
